Dog Breeds You Should Learn More About

The relationship between dogs and humans has seen the two entangled for thousands of years. As such, people have mastered the art of dog breeding; a science that has given rise to a variety of distinct breeds of dogs existing today.

People have been able to cultivate different breeds according to different temperaments, behavioral tendencies, sizes, and colors through selective breeding. For this reason, picking the right breed of dog should be a decision that’s not made with haste.

Here are some of the amazing dog breeds that you should know more about.

  1. The Pumi Dogs

Pumi dogs are native to Hungary where they were bred with the purpose of shepherding sheep and cows. Pumi dogs have a small stature but are best suited to an outdoor lifestyle because of how energetic they are.

Despite their high activity levels, Pumi dogs are a great choice for a family with kids as they’re highly people-oriented.

  1. The Australian Shepherd

Don’t be misled by the name of this dog into thinking it originates from Australia. As a matter of fact, this dog was bred in the United States during the 1800s. However, there is truth to the second part of its name.

The Australian Shepherd is an excellent dog when it comes to herding. They are naturally intelligent and full of energy hence why farmers usually use them to help herd sheep and cows.

3. The Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers are all-American dogs if there’s ever something of the sort. They’re the official dog of Massachusetts as well as the official mascot for Boston University.

These dogs came up as a crossbreed between a white English Terrier and a bulldog. Because of the markings on their bodies that resemble tuxedos, they’re nicknamed the ‘American Gentleman’. They’re great for city living but they can be quite fast so they should always be on a leash.

4. The Incredibly Huge Tibetan Mastiff

If you want a dog that’s certified to scare off intruders from your property, then the Tibetan Mastiff is the dog breed for you. It’s a big dog that weighs well over 200 pounds and is well-known for how loud its bark is. These character traits make this dog breed excellent guardians.

However, it’s almost obvious that this dog breed is not a great choice for people who live in apartments. Former United States president, Dwight Eisenhower felt that they would not do well in the White House either after receiving two Tibetan Mastiffs as a gift from Nepal’s government in 1958.

5. The Brave Basenji

The man who coined the phrase, ‘It’s not about the size of the dog but the size of the fight in the dog’, must have had the Basenji in mind. Basenjis are from East and Central Africa where they are used to hunt, believe it or not, lions.

They’re excellent trackers with exceptional eyesight and phenomenal jumping abilities. However, they’re not good at barking because they have flat larynxes.

It’s a Dog’s World

For most dog owners, their furry friends are much more than just a pet. Their dogs are a significant member of their family. Some dogs are bred for protection and providing vigilance while others are bred to live a luxurious life.

If you’re considering adopting a puppy or adult dog, make sure you work with an honest and reputable breeder to help you make the right decision.
